Dallas DISD - Talented and Gifted (TAG) Program Career Forum

Bobby D. Simmons, History and Law Instructor, Townview TAG Program

September, 2012

Along with fellow City of Dallas Sustainable Development and Construction staff, I attended an annual TAG Career forum for many years. One year, a student retreat to an area camp was arranged as part of a comprehensive City Planning workshop. The City Planning workshop involved 3 days of a simulated governing exercise by TAG students who would work in teams representing citizens, elected officials or the business/building community. I helped Bobby Simmons put the City Planning workshop together, as he said my past presentations to TAG led the teachers to want to develop a team-building urban planning workshop for the TAG students. It was a great workshop, with a lot of enthusiastic students, teachers and volunteers addressing governmental and community issues which are part of the urban planning process.

Dallas Academy - Visioning Workshop

November, 2013

A visioning workshop I coordinated and led along with some fellow volunteer City of Dallas Planning Staff. The young attendees of the workshop were special needs students who have challenges with ADHD, dyslexia or other social-interaction issues which require a more supervised educational environment. The workshop was wonderful, as the students really were engaged in the visioning of land use near their school located in the White Rock Lake area of East Dallas. It was a rewarding experience for me, as I received some very kind feedback from teachers, parents and students after the workshop was held (see additional images below).

I received a wonderful packet full of thank you letters and pictures from the Dallas Academy Visioning Workshop shortly after the event which I shared with my fellow Planning co-workers at Dallas City Hall. I took the packet contents and placed them on a simple display board for our office (as shown above).

Our whole Long Range Planning team felt the event at Dallas Academy was personally and professionally rewarding. I always gain a lot of personal satisfaction in this type of community outreach, as it helps remind me of the great opportunities and rewarding insight that I have received by sharing my work experience with students, residents, business owners and concerned citizens throughout Dallas.
